WATAC MAKING GREAT STRIDES

Each year WATAC strives to do more and give more. We are continually growing and attracting dedicated alumni who are following the lead of our outstanding, stalwart founding alumni family members. We seek to increase participation, membership, partnerships and sponsorships in support of our beloved Tougaloo College.

Every Year is the
Year of the Eagle Queen!!!
*From 1992 to present, Mississippi on the Potomac has been our signature event contributing over $300,000 to the college. We sincerely appreciate the sponsorship and participation from our Tougaloo family, friends and supporters.

*WATAC contributes to the Tougaloo College General Scholarship Fund in addition to awarding scholarships annually to our WATAC Scholars, selected by the WATAC Scholarship Committee. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to each of the six scholars who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and community service to include a deserving Community College transfer student.  The 2012-13 WATAC Scholars are:
Melissa Lynn Burton, Nneamaka C. Ezekwe, Victoria Porter, Detrice Roberts, Charden Virgil, and Robin D. Williams.

*Thanks to many of you, the Woodworth Chapel Tapestry Throw continues to be a WATAC "treasured keepsake." The Woodworth Chapel Clock is “a must” to keep you on schedule whether in the dorm room or on the office desk. Visit the WATAC Store also for  : The Woodworth Chapel Ornament,  The ArtLot Gallery (Mirian Gibson-Bowden) , the MOTP Golf Shirt and more.

*Over the years, the chapter has been an active member of the Washington Inter-Alumni Council/United Negro College Fund including its Annual Commemorative Breakfast honoring the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In January 2010, WIAC/UNCF recognized WATAC’s Chazeman Jackson, as the first recipient of the Grace Walker Phillips Youth Leadership Award.   WATAC member, Gregory Johnson, Esq. was honored as the 2012 Grace Walker Phillips Youth Leadership Award recipient. Congratulations to Hope Goins '02 for being named Tougaloo College Young Alumnus of the Year 2012-2013 and representing Tougaloo College during the UNCF National Alumni Council Leadership Conference at the Marriott Hotel, Atlanta, GA, February 13 – 17, 2013. WATAC young alums are indeed SOARING!!!

*In 2010, WATAC joined with local Mississippi HBCU Alumni Chapters to rally the involvement of alumni from Tougaloo College, Jackson State University, Alcorn State University and Mississippi Valley University (TJAM). We continued the team spirit with TJAM for the 3rd Annual Cookout in August, 2012 and also participated in the Inaugural TJAM Scholarship Gala, April 20, 2012 which was an enjoyable success.

The clarion call came once again in 2012 to strengthen the HBCU ties on a broader scale by joining not just the Mississippi HBCU’s  or the UNCF institutions but connecting with ALL of the HBCUs under the umbrella of  the HBCU Alliance. It is hoped that the organization will foster a kind of unity that will benefit each of our institutions both fraternally and fiscally.

July 2012, at Mississippi On the Potomac XX, we reveled in our “made to order” weather and cheered for our golfers at Andrews AFB on Friday; Saturday, we basked in the summer breeze at the Catfish Buffet Outing on the Potomac while listening to and singing “oldies but goodies”. To close our weekend on Sunday, we enjoyed a “laid-back” afternoon of jazz, punctuated with timeless poetry from our own Hermand Bennett. WATAC is now offering Bennett’s books in the WATAC store for your year-round enjoyment. Check it out! (Proceeds will benefit the WATAC Scholars Fund.)
