The Washington Area Tougaloo Alumni Chapter Proudly Presents....An Ordinary Hero:  The True Story of Tougaloo Alumni Joan Trumpauer Mulholland" by Loki Mulholland

       Courtesy of Joan Trumpauer Mulholland

The amazing true story of one white Southern woman's courage to choose her convictions and join the Civil Rights Movement.  By the time she was 19, Joan Trumpauer was shot at, attacked, and put on death row but that's just the beginning of her remarkable journey to help change the world.  Heralded as an unsung hero but disowned by her family, Joan takes us on an incredible journey of her life in the Civil Rights Movement and the power of the human spirit to persevere against the world.  To purchase the DVD go to the WATAC Store then select the online or download-mail-in-form option.

Each year WATAC strives to do more and give more. We are continually growing and attracting dedicated alumni who are following the lead of our committed and stalwart founding alumni family members. We seek to fortify the foundation that they created by increasing participation, membership, partnerships and sponsorships for our beloved Tougaloo College.

Every Year is the Year of the Eagle Queen!!!

*From 1992 to present, Mississippi on the Potomac has been our signature event contributing over
$450,000 to the college. We sincerely appreciate the sponsorship and participation from our Tougaloo family, friends and supporters. (See Sponsorship Tab)

WATAC contributes to the Tougaloo College General Scholarship Fund in addition to awarding scholarships annually to our WATAC Scholars, selected by the WATAC Scholarship Committee. A scholarship of $1000 is awarded to each of the scholars who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and community service to include a deserving Community College transfer student. The 2016-17 WATAC Scholars are: Charmaine Kelly, Sophomore; Maurice Whalen, Jr., Senior; Jamease Williams, Freshman; Olexis Haymon, Junior and Abednego Nii Adom Commey, Freshman.

The recently restored Historic Robert O. Wilder Building…”The Mansion” Tapestry is here! Over the years, WATAC has been an active member of the Washington Inter-Alumni Council/United Negro College Fund, participating in the Annual Commemorative Breakfast honoring the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In January 2010, WIAC/UNCF recognized WATAC’s Chazeman Jackson, as the first recipient of the Grace Walker Phillips Youth Leadership Award. WATAC member, Gregory Johnson, Esq. was honored as the 2012 Grace Walker Phillips Youth Leadership Award recipient. Congratulations to Hope Goins '02 for being named Tougaloo College Young Alumnus of the Year 2012-2013. Gregory Johnson '08 was recognized as 2014 Tougaloo College Outstanding Young Alumnus. For 2014, Shirlethia Franklin is being honored as the 2015 Young Alum of the Year. In 2016, Hope Goins was named the 2016 Grace Walker Phillips Youth Leadership Recipient. WATAC young alums continue to SOAR!!!

WATAC is encouraged by the participation of our area Young Alums as they engage with the chapter to strengthen ties and build bridges. We welcome their continued and increased efforts towards being a true intergenerational organization contributing to the stability of our beloved alma mater. This year, not only are the young alums pictured on the WATAC Yearbook section of our website but several were honored at the 1st Annual “40 Under 40” Banquet held on the Tougaloo College campus , October 2016. We are proud to feature them on our WATAC Home Page.

*In 2010, WATAC joined with local Mississippi HBCU Alumni Chapters to rally the involvement of alumni from Tougaloo College, Jackson State University, Alcorn State University and Mississippi Valley University with the formation of TJAM. The tradition continues with the 2017 TJAM Masquerade Ball on April 8, 2017 at Martin’s Crosswinds, Greenbelt, MD. It is our intent that this effort will strengthen the HBCU ties on a broader scale by actively participating in the TJAM event, the Washington Inter-Alumni Council- UNCF organization and the DC- HBCU Alumni Alliance. It is hoped that this partnership will foster a kind of unity that will benefit each of our institutions both fraternally and fiscally. For more info on the DC HBCU Alumni Alliance, visit http://www.dchbcu.org/index.htm. This past year, Tougaloo was represented by runners, walkers and volunteers in the 4th Annual DC HBCU Alumni Alliance 5K RUN 2K WALK. We are again calling for all runners, walkers and others to participate in the 5th Annual DC HBCU Alumni Alliance RUN/WALK to be held Saturday, June 24, 2017. Tougaloo WINS when we RUN or WALK!

July 2016, at Mississippi On the Potomac XXIV, we reveled in our “made to order” weather and cheered for our golfers at Andrews AFB on Friday; Saturday, we basked in the summer breezes at the Catfish Buffet Outing on the Potomac at Bretton Woods, while listening to and singing “oldies but goodies” with “the Young Bucks”. To close our weekend on Sunday, we enjoyed a “laid-back” afternoon of jazz performed by Julia Nixon and Collaboration at a new location, the downtown Rosa Mexicano. It was a joyful, festive and exhilarating afternoon with great food and hospitality! Can’t wait ‘til July 2017!

WATAC would be honored to have you participate with us as part of our committed, steadfast, inter-generational, legacy-building team for TOUGALOO COLLEGE! Be sure to mark your calendar for Mississippi On the Potomac XXV, July 13-16, 2017 and join the fun!
